A flooded single-story house usually needs a 20-yard or 30-yard dumpster for wet drywall, carpet, pad, insulation and furniture. Wet debris is far heavier than dry: drywall averages 467 pounds per cubic yard dry (EPA), and soaked drywall and carpet weigh more. Size by weight, not space.

| Cleanup | Typical size | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Flooded rooms: drywall cut 2–4 ft up, carpet, pad | 20-yard | Water weight |
| Whole flooded house with furniture | 30-yard, or two swaps | Water weight |
| Storm limbs and fencing | 20-yard | Low weight, bulky |
| Shingles torn off by wind | Size by squares | 240 lb per square |
What can go in a storm debris dumpster?
Storm debris dumpsters take drywall, carpet, pad, insulation, furniture, cabinets, flooring, fencing, limbs and shingles. Refrigerators and freezers with Freon go in for $50 each. Spoiled food, fuel cans, propane tanks, chemicals, wet paint and batteries cannot go in.
- Generators with fuel, gas cans and propane cylinders
- Pool chemicals, cleaners and pesticides
- Car and lawn-mower batteries
Should I use a dumpster or the city's curbside storm pickup?
After a declared disaster, cities and counties in Southeast Texas often run curbside debris collection with sorted piles and set pickup passes. That service is usually free but runs on the city's schedule. A dumpster costs money but gets wet debris out of your house now, which helps slow mold.
Many homeowners use both: a dumpster for the wet interior debris in the first week, the curb for limbs. Follow your city's debris guidance for what goes to the curb.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (National Hurricane Center). Hurricane Harvey (2017), Tropical Storm Imelda (2019) and Hurricane Laura (2020) each left heavy flood and wind debris across Southeast Texas.
What rules apply to storm cleanup?
Appliances with refrigerant must have it recovered before disposal under EPA 40 CFR 82.155, which is why fridges and freezers carry a $50 fee. Older commercial buildings can contain asbestos; storm-damaged buildings still fall under the EPA asbestos NESHAP, 40 CFR 61.145 before demolition.
- Document damage with photos before anything goes in the dumpster. Insurance adjusters often ask for them.
- Wear gloves, boots and an N95 or better mask around moldy materials.
- Keep debris level with the rim. Wet loads are heavy; tarp them.
These are summaries, not legal advice. Confirm with your permit office, HOA or the landfill.
What does a storm debris dumpster rental cost?
Your 20-yard dumpster price includes delivery, pickup, 7 days and 3 tons. Weight over 3 tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound, not rounded up. A copy of the certified landfill scale ticket comes with your final invoice, emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup.
Here is how the example works. The ticket shows 3.60 tons net. That is 0.60 tons over the 3 included tons. 0.60 × $75 = $45.00.
Other charges happen only if they apply: $25 for each day past 7, $50 per mattress, tire or Freon appliance, and a $125 trip fee if the driver cannot reach the dumpster.

Storm debris dumpster questions
How fast can I get a dumpster after a hurricane?
Book by 3 PM for guaranteed next-day delivery on normal days. After a major storm, demand jumps, so call as soon as roads are open.
Will soaked carpet put my dumpster over the weight limit?
It can. Water adds a lot of weight. Let carpet and pad drain where you can, and use the estimator with the heavier material settings.
Can I put a flooded refrigerator in the dumpster?
It can go in for $50, with the food removed. The landfill recovers the refrigerant separately.
Can I keep the dumpster longer during a big cleanup?
Each day past the included 7 is $25. If it fills, we swap it; a swap is billed as a new rental.
