What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off?

A single-layer roof up to about 25 squares fits a 20-yard dumpster. Shingles are heavy, so weight sets the size, not space. At 240 pounds per square, a 15-yard covers about 20 squares, a 20-yard about 25 squares and a 30-yard about 33 squares before passing the included tons.

Assumes 80 lb bundles and 3 bundles per square (240 lb per square, 480 lb with two layers). Use your bundle's printed weight.

Sizes: 15-yard (2.5 tons), 20-yard (3 tons), 30-yard (4 tons).

How much do roofing shingles weigh in a dumpster?

One square of asphalt shingles weighs about 240 pounds when bundles weigh 80 pounds and three make a square. Multiply by your squares: 25 squares × 240 lb = 6,000 lb, or 3 tons. Check the bundle label, because architectural shingles often weigh more than 3-tab.

Felt, nails, drip edge and flashing add a little. Wet shingles add more, so tarp an open load if rain is coming. The EPA average for asphalt roofing debris is 731 lb per cubic yard (EPA conversion factors), which is why a 20-yard reaches its weight limit with space still showing.

Rotten decking or plywood adds weight too. If you know you are replacing sheathing, tell us when you book.

Where should the dumpster sit for a roof job?

Set the roofing dumpster as close to the eave as the truck can reach, usually at the end of the driveway nearest the drop zone. The truck needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance. Boards go under the rails to protect the driveway.

  • Tell us the delivery day before your crew arrives. Book by 3 PM for next-day.
  • The driver calls 20–30 minutes ahead, so the crew can move trucks and trailers out of the way.
  • Keep shingles level with the rim. A load above the rim can't go on the highway, and a $125 trip fee applies.

What rules apply to roofing debris?

Federal safety rules control how debris leaves the roof. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a), an enclosed chute is required when material is dropped more than 20 feet outside a building's exterior walls. Below that height, crews can drop into a dumpster set directly below the drop zone.

  • Old roofs on pre-1981 commercial buildings can contain asbestos felt or roof coatings. A survey may be required first under the EPA asbestos NESHAP, 40 CFR 61.145.
  • Keep tar buckets, wet coatings and solvents out. Wet paint and hazardous chemicals are not allowed.
  • Swaps for big jobs: a full dumpster pulled and an empty one dropped is billed as a new flat-rate rental.

What does a roofing dumpster rental cost?

Your 20-yard dumpster price includes delivery, pickup, 7 days and 3 tons. Weight over 3 tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound, not rounded up. A copy of the certified landfill scale ticket comes with your final invoice, emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup.

Here is how the example works. The ticket shows 3.30 tons net. That is 0.30 tons over the 3 included tons. 0.30 × $75 = $22.50.

Other charges happen only if they apply: $25 for each day past 7, $50 per mattress, tire or Freon appliance, and a $125 trip fee if the driver cannot reach the dumpster.

Roofing dumpster questions

What size dumpster do I need for a 30-square roof?

A single-layer 30-square roof weighs about 3.6 tons at 240 lb per square. That fits a 30-yard dumpster (4 tons included). Two layers weigh about 7.2 tons, so plan a 30-yard plus a swap.

Can I put shingles in a 15-yard dumpster?

Our 15-yard handles small roofs up to about 20 squares of single-layer shingles. Past that, the 2.5 included tons run out before the space does.

Can you drop the dumpster before my roofers arrive?

Order by 3 PM and we guarantee next-day delivery between 7 AM and 5 PM. Many crews book the dumpster for the day before the tear-off so it is waiting.

Do roofing nails damage the dumpster or my driveway?

Nails stay inside the steel box. Our boards keep the rails off your driveway. A magnetic sweep around the drop zone after the job is still smart.

Can underlayment and wood decking go in the same dumpster?

Underlayment, felt, decking, flashing and gutters can all go in with the shingles. They add weight, so count them in your tons.
