A kitchen remodel usually needs a 15-yard or 20-yard dumpster. A kitchen up to about 200 square feet with cabinets, counters and drywall fits a 15-yard. A larger kitchen, or one with flooring and a wall coming down, fits a 20-yard. One bathroom fits a 10-yard.

| Project | Typical size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One bathroom gut | 10-yard | Tile and a tub are dense; volume is small |
| Kitchen up to ~200 sq ft | 15-yard | Cabinets and counters take space |
| Larger kitchen or kitchen + flooring | 20-yard | Adds drywall and floor debris |
| Two bathrooms, or bath + bedroom | 15-yard | Two rooms of tile and fixtures |
| Whole-floor remodel | 30-yard | Mixed debris from several rooms |
How heavy is remodel debris?
Mixed remodel debris averages about 417 pounds per cubic yard, according to EPA conversion factors. That means a full 20-yard dumpster of remodel debris weighs about 4.2 tons, over its 3 included tons. Tile, plaster and stone counters push it higher; cabinets and trim keep it lighter.
Two ways to stay inside your included tons: break cabinets down and fill gaps so you need less space, and keep tile, mortar bed and stone in the bottom third of the load so you can see how much is going in.

How long should I rent a dumpster for a remodel?
Most remodel rentals start with the included 7 days. Demolition usually produces most of the debris in the first few days, then the job slows down. If the remodel runs long, each extra day is $25, which often costs less than a second rental.
If the dumpster fills during demo, we swap it for an empty one. A swap is billed as a new flat-rate rental with its own 7 days and included tons.

What rules apply to remodel debris?
Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Under the EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (40 CFR 745 Subpart E), paid renovators must follow lead-safe work practices. Older homes can also have asbestos in flooring, mastic or ceiling texture, which should be tested before demolition.
- Old fridges and window AC units can go in for $50 each. Federal law (EPA 40 CFR 82.155) requires the refrigerant to be recovered before disposal.
- Wet paint, thinners and adhesives in liquid form are not allowed. Dried paint cans with no liquid are fine.
- Keep the dumpster off new concrete or a driveway that is still curing.

What does a remodeling dumpster rental cost?
Your 20-yard dumpster price includes delivery, pickup, 7 days and 3 tons. Weight over 3 tons costs $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound, not rounded up. A copy of the certified landfill scale ticket comes with your final invoice, emailed 3 to 5 business days after pickup.
Here is how the example works. The ticket shows 3.25 tons net. That is 0.25 tons over the 3 included tons. 0.25 × $75 = $18.75.
Other charges happen only if they apply: $25 for each day past 7, $50 per mattress, tire or Freon appliance, and a $125 trip fee if the driver cannot reach the dumpster.

Remodeling dumpster questions
Can I put old cabinets and countertops in the dumpster?
Cabinets, laminate and stone countertops, sinks and faucets can all go in. Stone counters are heavy, so count them toward your tons.
Can drywall go in a remodel dumpster?
Drywall is allowed. It averages about 467 lb per cubic yard (EPA), so a lot of drywall adds up. Keep it dry if you can.
Is a 10-yard enough for a bathroom remodel?
One full bathroom usually fits in a 10-yard: tub, toilet, vanity, tile and drywall. Add a second room and move up to a 15-yard.
Can I put an old refrigerator in the dumpster?
A fridge, freezer or AC unit that contains Freon can go in for $50 each. The landfill processes it separately to recover the refrigerant.
What if my remodel takes three weeks?
Keep the dumpster and pay $25 per day after the first 7, or have it swapped when full. We can help you work out which costs less.
