A 40-yard dumpster measures about 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 8 feet tall, and holds 40 cubic yards: about 12 to 16 pickup-truck loads. It holds about 5 to 6 tons of debris. The 40-yard has the same length as our 30-yard but walls 2 feet higher, so it takes no more driveway or lot space.

What is a 40-yard dumpster used for?
A 40-yard dumpster is built for major demolitions, new construction and large commercial projects: whole-structure tear-outs, framing and drywall waste from new builds, and big commercial cleanouts. It is the size to choose when the debris is bulky and the job would fill a 30-yard more than once.

- Whole-house or building interior demolition
- New-construction framing, sheathing and packaging waste
- Warehouse, retail or office cleanouts
- Large estate or multi-unit property turnovers
Will a 40-yard dumpster go over its weight?
A 40-yard dumpster reaches its weight before its volume when the debris is dense. Mixed construction debris averages about 417 pounds per cubic yard (EPA), so 40 full yards would weigh about 8.3 tons, past the 5–6 tons the 40-yard holds. Keep shingles, tile and plaster in a smaller dumpster and fill the 40 with bulky, lighter debris.
Is a 40 yard dumpster rental or a 30-yard better for my job?
Choose the 40-yard for bulky, light debris that would overflow a 30-yard, and the 30-yard for denser loads. Both are about 22 feet long. The 30-yard is 6 feet tall with 4 tons included; the 40-yard is 8 feet tall and holds 5 to 6 tons. Tall walls mean loading through the rear door.
What rules apply to a 40-yard on a job site?
Job-site rules still apply to a 40-yard. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a), an enclosed chute is required when debris drops more than 20 feet outside a building's exterior walls. Before demolishing commercial or public buildings, the EPA asbestos NESHAP, 40 CFR 61.145 requires an asbestos inspection. Keep the load level with the top rim.

40-yard dumpster questions
How many tons can a 40-yard dumpster hold?
Our 40-yard holds about 5 to 6 tons. Your quote states the included tons; weight over that is $75 per ton, charged by the exact pound.
How many pickup loads is a 40-yard dumpster?
About 12 to 16 pickup-truck loads, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level holds 2 to 3 cubic yards.
Can a 40-yard dumpster go in a driveway?
It has about the same footprint as our 30-yard, about 22 ft long and 7.5 ft wide. The truck needs about 60 ft of straight approach and room overhead, so lots and job sites are the usual spot.
Can I put concrete in a 40-yard dumpster?
Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in a 10 or 15-yard, filled halfway. A 40-yard of concrete would be far over legal road weight.
Do you swap 40-yard dumpsters on active job sites?
A swap pulls the full dumpster and drops an empty one. Each swap is billed as a new flat-rate rental.
