How to Read a Dumpster Scale Ticket

A dumpster scale ticket shows the truck's gross weight with your load, its tare weight empty, and the net weight of your debris. Subtract the included tons for your dumpster size from the net weight. Anything left over is your overage.

What does each line on a dumpster scale ticket mean?

Every landfill scale ticket records the same core lines: the date and time, the truck, the gross weight, the tare weight and the net weight. Net is the only number your bill uses. It equals gross minus tare, and it is the weight of your debris alone.

  • Gross: the truck carrying your full dumpster as it crosses the scale.
  • Tare: the same truck and dumpster empty, after dumping.
  • Net: gross minus tare. This is your debris.
  • Ticket number and time: tie the weight to your haul.

Sample ticket · 15-yard

Gross (truck + full dumpster)
31.20 t
Tare (same truck, empty)
28.30 t
Net debris weight
2.90 t
Included with rental
2.50 t

0.40 t
Overage at $75/ton
$30.00

How do I check my overage?

Check your overage in three steps. Find the net weight on the ticket. Subtract the tons included with your dumpster size: 2 for a 10-yard, 2.5 for a 15-yard, 3 for a 20-yard, 4 for a 30-yard. Multiply what is left by $75. That number should match the overage line on your invoice.

Sample: a 15-yard ticket shows 2.90 tons net. 2.90 − 2.50 = 0.40 tons. 0.40 × $75 = $30.00. Because Blaine Bros bills by the exact pound, partial tons are not rounded up.

What if a number on the ticket looks wrong?

If a number looks wrong, call us with the invoice and the ticket number. The ticket is printed by the landfill's certified scale, not by us, which is why we send you a copy. Common surprises are rain-soaked loads and debris added by neighbors, both of which are real weight.

Related questions

Why does the invoice take a few days?

The landfill processes our disposal logs before the ticket is final. Invoices go out 3 to 5 business days after pickup.

Is the scale ticket the same as the invoice?

The ticket is the landfill's weight record. The invoice is our bill, which uses the ticket's net weight.
